Spartanburg, S.C. – Scott Slappey and Jacob Wolf drove in two runs each as the Miami (OH) RedHawks defeated USC Upstate 9-0 Friday afternoon in non-conference baseball action from Harley Park.
Upstate falls to 1-3 on the season while Miami (OH) improves to 1-2.
Ryan Powers (1-1) earned the win as he tossed six shutout innings while allowing no hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Brian Boocock (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Chris Ticherich (1) earned the save with three scoreless innings of relief on four hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
The RedHawks took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second highlighted by an RBI single by Chad Sedio. Matt Honchel started the inning with a single to right field and would advance to third following a groundout by Max Andresen and Slappey's single. Honchel scored during the next at-bat when Sedio drove a 3-1 pitch into right field. Kendall Johnson later drew a bases loaded walk that brought home Slappey.
Miami (OH) added a single run each in the fourth and fifth innings to push its lead to 4-0. Sedio started the fourth with a leadoff triple and came home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Ryan Elble. In the top of the fifth, Andresen drove home Honchel with his two-out double to left center field.
The RedHawks broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning to increase their advantage to 8-0. Slappey and Wolf both had two RBI hits in the frame. Slappey began the scoring with his two-run double to left field and Wolf followed two batters later by taking a first-pitch single down the left field line that plated two.
Steve Sada added an RBI single in the top of the eighth to give Miami (OH) a 9-0 lead. Jake Romano led off the inning with a triple and scored on the hit by Sada.
Sophomore shortstop Daniel Fickas led the Spartans with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Junior third baseman Jake Beaver and sophomore catcher Drew Fisher had one hit apiece.
Honchel finished with four hits for the RedHawks and Sada contributed three.
Upstate returns to the diamond Saturday afternoon as it hosts Pittsburgh at 1 p.m.
