Furman Powers Past USC Upstate

Greenville, S.C. – Furman hit four home runs and registered a season-high 22 hits on its way to a 20-6 victory over USC Upstate Tuesday from Latham Stadium.

Furman used an RBI single by Chris Ohmstede, a three-run home run from Jordan Simpson and a two-run home run from Brandon Elmy in the bottom of the first inning to build a 6-0 lead.

Shortstop Sims Griffith gave the Paladins an 8-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run single through the left side to drive in Simpson and Elmy.

Simpson connected for his second two-run home run of the game in the fourth inning to put Furman ahead 10-0.

Upstate pushed across its first two runs of the game in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Charlie Carpenter and a sacrifice fly from Jake Beaver. Erik Samples drew a one-out walk to begin the rally to mark the 21st consecutive game he has reached base safely.

A two-run triple from Jake Jones, a throwing error on the Upstate infield and an RBI single by Ohmstede in the seventh gave Furman a 14-2 lead.

Landon Kay hit the fourth home run of the night for Furman when he sent a three-run roundtripper over the left-centerfield fence in the eighth inning.

Upstate tallied four runs in the ninth inning on a wild pitch, a two-run double from Carpenter and a sacrifice fly by Stephen Dowling.

Carpenter led Upstate with three hits and three RBIs to post his sixth three-hit game and 10th multi-RBI game of the season. The Winter Springs, Fla., native leads Upstate with 33 RBIs and entered the game ranked eighth in the Atlantic Sun.

Harry Norman pitched a predetermined two innings and earned the win to collect his first victory of the season. Dylan Parker (2-2) went the first 2.1 innings for Upstate and took the loss.

Upstate puts the finishing touches on its midweek competition Wednesday at 6 p.m. when the Spartans head across town to face Wofford from King Field.
