Maloy Heaghney's Three-Run Triple Lifts Baseball to 5-2 Crosstown Rivalry Series Over Wofford at Fifth Third Park

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Returning to the park it helped open last April, USC Upstate baseball put itself back in the win column, downing its crosstown rival Wofford Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Park, the home of the Hub City Spartanburgers. The Spartans captured victory by a 5-2 score, incidentally a reverse of the final margin of last season's game at the venue.
Â
Striking first, Upstate put a run on the board in the first following a pair of leadoff hits from redshirt sophomore centerfield Henry Zenor and redshirt senior third baseman Jake Armsey. Zenor crossed as the Terriers turned a double play, marking the first run of the ballgame. Seeing the first two batters of the following frame reach, the Spartans' sacrifice's a sac bunt from senior second baseman Gage Griggs and a sac fly from redshirt sophomore rightfielder Kenan Bowman pushed across the team's second tally.
Â
Wofford fought back, scratching two in the fourth to knot the ball. However, the Spartans remained unfazed, loading the bases in the fifth before redshirt sophomore shortstop Maloy Heaghney delivered the biggest hit of the night, a bases-clearing triple to the alley in right-center.
Â
Locking down the win, Upstate's bullpen proved nails as redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher Jacob Kirby and senior righty Reece Hemmerling combined for 5.0 innings of scoreless relief. Kirby worked 3.0 shutout innings, earning his second win of the season while Hemmerling offered 2.0 scoreless frames for his first career save.
