Spartanburg, S.C. – Devon Ortiz's infield single with two outs in the 12th inning scored the winning run as USC Upstate earned a 10-9 win over UNC Asheville at Harley Park on Wednesday.
Upstate improves to 1-3 while UNC Asheville drops to 1-3.
Scoring Breakdown
- Top 1st – UNC Asheville took a 2-0 lead thanks to a Brandon Lankford double and a Joe Tietjen sacrifice fly.
- Bottom 1st – J.J. Shimko's bases-loaded single tied the game at 2. The Spartans took their first lead of the game on a Brendan Brundage sacrifice fly and would lead 4-0 at the end of the inning thanks to a Jake Bourke single that scored Shimko.
- Top 2nd – UNC Asheville scored seven runs in the inning highlighted by a Justin Woods grand slam.
- Bottom 2nd – Ortiz reached on a two-out walk followed by singles from Carpenter and Shimko to load the bases. Brundage singled to score Ortiz before a flyout ended the inning.
- Bottom 3rd – Drake Harris started a two-out rally with a single and scored on a Hunter Gilbert double to make the score 9-6.
- Bottom 6th – Carpenter opened the inning with a single followed by a walk to Shimko. Carpenter advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a Bourke sacrifice fly to bring Upstate within two, 9-7.
- Bottom 8th – Upstate had the bases loaded without an out before UNC Asheville traded a double play for a run. The Spartans tied the game on a wild pitch and had the bases loaded with two outs before a flyout ended the inning.
- Bottom 12th – Harris reached on a two-out single and advanced to second on a walk to Gilbert. Ortiz hit a ground ball behind the first base bag that was stopped by a diving Bulldog infielder but first base was left uncovered. Harris reached third base and raced home as the throw was late to give the Spartans the win.

- Harris, Brundage and Carpenter each had three hits while Gilbert, Ortiz and Shimko finished with two hits.
- The 17 hits recorded by the Spartans is a season-best.
- Lankford, Carmine Pagano and Jake Madole each had two hits to lead the Bulldogs.
- After allowing nine runs on four hits in the first two innings, the Spartan pitching staff scattered six hits over 10 shutout innings for the remainder of the game.
- Kevin Hickey (1-0) earned the win as he allowed two hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
- Derek Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss after he surrendered a run on three hits in 1.2 innings.
