Spartanburg, S.C. – J.J. Shimko finished a home run shy of the cycle while Conner Campbell threw six shutout innings as USC Upstate defeated Georgetown 12-0 on Friday afternoon at Harley Park.

Upstate improves to 2-3 while Georgetown drops to 2-3.

Scoring Breakdown

Bottom 1^st – Upstate pushed across three runs in its first at-bat. Devon Ortiz reached on a single with one out and advanced to third on a Charlie Carpenter base hit. Shimko brought home Ortiz and Carpenter with a triple before scoring on a Brendan Brundage base hit.
Bottom 4^th – Russell Schwertfeger led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before taking third on a Drake Harris bunt single. Schwertfeger scored on a Georgetown error before Shimko plated two runs with a double.
Bottom 5^th – Jake Bourke and Schwertfeger opened the inning with singles before advancing to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Hunter Gilbert's single scored Bourke and Schwertfeger before Gilbert advanced to third on an Ortiz double. An infield single scored Gilbert before a bases-loaded walk plated Ortiz.
Bottom 8^th – Jordan Miller drove in two runs with a one-out double.

Notables

Shimko went 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple and four RBI.
Gilbert, Ortiz, Carpenter, Bourke and Schwertfeger each had two hits.
Schwertfeger led the Spartans with three runs scored.
Three Upstate pitchers limited Georgetown to six hits.
Campbell scattered two hits with three strikeouts in six innings to earn his first collegiate win.
