Spartans Set to Host Presbyterian in Back-to-Back Series

Series History
Since USC Upstate joined the DI ranks in 2008, the Upstate-Presbyterian series is tied 5-5. The all-time series is also tied 22-22, dating back to 1978. The Spartans took the last meeting between the two teams on Feb. 4, 2020 at the Hodge Center, a 70-60 win that snapped a four-game skid against the Blue Hose. Anda Kuzmina notched her first career double-double in that game, and the Spartans shot lights out in the fourth quarter, hitting 63.6 percent from the field while holding Presbyterian to just 11.8 percent in the period.

Ones to Watch
Upstate – Molly Coleman is coming off a strong performance as she opened the Longwood series with her first career double-double that included a career-high in points (19) and rebounds (10). Her 19 points in the game led the Spartan offense on the night. Denijsha Wilson continues to average double-figures in scoring, most recently posting 17 and 12 points, respectively, against Longwood. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter was named Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday and leads the Spartans in points per game with 12.3. The Spartans have outrebounded their opponent the past five games, 221-169, and are led on the glass this season by Brooks-Sumpter (6.3rpg) and Marnicha Prudent (5.9rpg).

Presbyterian – Tionna Carter leads PC in both scoring (13.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg), ranking eighth and fourth, respectively, in the Big South in those categories. The sophomore sits fifth in both field goal percentage (.506) and free throw percentage (.815). Trinity Johnson continues to pace the Blue Hose in assists, averaging 3.3 per game, fifth in the conference. Freshman guard Maleia Bracone tops the Blue Hose in steals and is fifth in the league, averaging 1.9 per contest.

The Spartans head back out on the road next weekend for a two-game series at Hampton. Game one against the Pirates tips at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 with game two set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16.
