Upstate 9th at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - On a chilly, blustery day in New Jersey, the USC Upstate women's golf team battled through the conditions to post a team score of 344 and stands ninth out of 18 teams at the 36-hole Rutgers Invitational Friday afternoon at the 5,887-yard, par 72 Rutgers University Golf Club.
"We haven't faced playing conditions like this since early last spring," said head coach Todd Lawton. "With temperatures in the 50's and gusting winds, we needed to maintain our focus and take a little more of what the course gave us at the beginning of the round and didn't. The course was long and wet. Fortunately, we regrouped a little on the back-9 and played much better. We need to continue to improve tomorrow and play like we are capable of."
Bethune-Cookman leads the tournament after posting a strong 318 in trying conditions. Yale is second at 329 and is followed by Siena (331), Rutgers (336), St. John's (337), Bucknell (341), Lehigh (342), Central Connecticut (343), Upstate (344), Fairleigh Dickinson (345), Boston (347), Sacred Heart (348), Hartford (353), Monmouth (359), New York State-Albany (364), St. Francis (365), Mount St. Mary's (371), and Hampton (384). Upstate trails second place Yale by 15 strokes and is amongst a group of seven teams separated by just seven shots.
Individually, Richelle Wedzik posted an 83 to lead the Spartans. She currently stands tied for 18th with five others in the field of 98 players. Julie Miller is just one stroke back after shooting an 84 and is tied for 24th with three other players. Traci Bodner lowered her score by five strokes from the front-9 to the back-9 and finished with an 87. She is tied for 39th. Richia Wedzik and Johanna Ebenhag each finished with a 90 and are tied for 63rd.
Yale's Ellie Brophy opened the tournament with a 76 to take the lead heading into Saturday's final round. She leads by one stroke over Brittany Lambertson from St. John's.
