Cyrill Softball Stadium 2026
USC Upstate has long benefited from the vision and generosity of individuals committed to building first-class facilities, and Cyrill Stadium stands as one of the clearest examples. Widely regarded as one of the top facilities in Division I softball, Cyrill Stadium has become a championship-caliber home for Spartan softball and a destination site for multiple non-conference tournaments each season. The field, was named after legendary and current head coach, Chris Hawkins in 2023.
Named for Frank Cyrill, the stadium was built on the vision of creating one of the premier softball facilities in the South, regardless of NCAA division. After countless hours of work from Cyrill, head coach Chris Hawkins and the support of several other individuals and companies, Cyrill Stadium opened for the 2002 season and has continued to grow ever since.
The facility was constructed in phases, with the field, dugouts, concrete seating area and lights completed in time for the 2002 season. The press box followed for the 2004 season, while permanent stadium seating was completed in December 2004. Prior to the 2017 season, a new video scoreboard was added beyond the left field fence. More recently, minor upgrades have been made to both the home and away dugouts, and additional renovations are planned as part of “Elevate Upstate,” the University’s strategic plan through 2030.
Cyrill Stadium has also earned national and regional recognition for its quality and upkeep. The facility was named the Sports Turf Managers Association College Softball Field of the Year in 2006 and 2015, and has also earned multiple South Carolina Sports Turf Managers Field of the Year honors. In addition, Cyrill Stadium received the 2006 NFCA/TURFACE National Field Maintenance Award and the 2003 regional TURFACE Field Maintenance Award.
Beyond its appearance and awards, Cyrill Stadium has been the setting for sustained Spartan success and home to multiple program championships.
