
Spartan Women's Tennis Opens Play at ITA Southeast Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) opened play for the USC Upstate women's tennis team on Wednesday afternoon at the ITA Southeast Regionals at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, falling 7-5, 6-3 to Appalachian State's Lauren Holton in pre-qualifier singles play.
Senior Susana Hernandez (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano) begins play in the qualifier singles bracket on Thursday, playing Eastern Kentucky's Alexandra Sitnikova, the eight-seed in the bracket, at 11 a.m. Hernandez will need to win two matches on Thursday to make the main draw of the event, which begins Friday.
Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El Angel) will start play in the main draw, facing North Carolina's junior Meg Fanjoy. Novo, a two-time Division II All-American will face a stiff test in Fanjoy, who was ranked 40th in the ITA NCAA Division I doubles rankings last year with partner Austin Smith.
Milovanovic will get another chance to advance at the ITAs when she teams with doubles partner, Novo. The duo will face Elon's Deanna Bailey and Jenn Tucci in the opening round on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
