CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El Angel) posted a straight-set, 6-3, 6-3 win over North Carolina's Meg Fanjoy in the first round in the main singles draw at the ITA Indoor Southeast Regionals at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Friday.
Fanjoy, who was ranked 40th in the ITA NCAA Division I doubles rankings last year with partner Austin Smith and a 25-16 singles record heading into the season, had a problem solving the two-time NCAA Division II All-American Novo during the match. Assistant coach Tami Matheny said Novo was able to dictate the pace of the match and also posted several remarkable shots en route to the win.
However, the draw will not play favorites for Novo, as she moves on to face Duke's third-seeded Ellah Nze on Saturday at 12 p.m. Nze, a freshman, is ranked 35th in the ITA Preseason doubles rankings along with partner Elizabeth Plotkin.
