SUFFOLK, Va. - Julie Miller and Richelle Wedzik led the way for the USC Upstate women's golf team Monday, leading the Spartans to fourth-place after 36 holes of the 54-hole Lady Monarch Invitational hosted by Old Dominion.
Upstate, playing in its first tournament having to play 36 holes in one day and 54 in two days, shot a consistent pair of rounds Monday, coming in at 316 and 315 for a 36-hole total of 631 to take fourth place after the first day of golf at the 6,115-yard, par-72 Cedar Point Golf Club. The Spartans trail first place Longwood by 31 strokes.
"This is our first tournament having to play 36 holes in a single day and it was exciting to make it through and score pretty well," said head coach Todd Lawton. "Obviously we had some good scores in the 70s, but we could have and should have been lower. While we could have finished lower, the good thing is that we are still in the hunt."
Longwood turned in rounds of 302 and 298 for a 600 total. Charleston Southern is second with a 624 total and is followed by Old Dominion (625), Upstate, Radford (632), Towson (652), Long Island - Brooklyn (674), Hampton (716) and South Carolina State (716) in the nine-team tournament. Eight shots separate the second-place and fifth-place teams.
Miller and Wedzik are tied for ninth after the duo posted 155 totals. Miller opened with a 78 and lowered her score by a stroke in the second round, carding a 77. Wedzik also lowered her score in the second round, opening with a 79 and finishing with a 76 for her 155 total. Richia Wedzik is 11th just one stroke back of Miller and twin sister Richelle at 156 after shooting 77-79 Monday. Audrey Church is tied for 24th with a 165 total and Traci Bodner is 37th with a 171 total. Jessica Wofford, playing as an individual, is tied for 33rd at 168.
Kameron Carter leads the individual competition, opening with a 72 and finishing with a 73 for a 145 total. The player from Longwood is at 1-over-par for the tournament.
