SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Diana Martinez (Medillin, Colombia/Nuestra Senora del Rosario) reached her 100th career victory, posting a doubles win and adding her 101st with a singles win as the USC Upstate women's tennis team completed a successful first day at the Wofford Fall Challenge on the campus of Wofford College on Saturday.
The tournament features play between two schools in singles and then playing another school in doubles, so it is not a true dual match format and no team scoring is recorded. However, the Spartans posted a 4-2 singles victory against Wofford and a 3-0 win in doubles against High Point. They dropped four of six singles matches to East Carolina.
Junior Maria Herrera (Buenos Aires, Argentina) also won two matches of the day, downing East Carolina's Vannia Soloer, 6-2, 6-3 and teamed with senior Diana Martinez (Medellin, Colombia/Nuestra Seniora del Rosario) to beat the team of High Point's Lea Catazana and Iris Schabetsberger, 8-5. The win was Martinez's 100th in her career, having rung up 51 singles wins and 49 doubles wins. Martinez also added a 7-5, 6-2 win against Wofford's Adriane Hodges for her 101st win.
Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El Angel) kept her impressive fall winning streak alive, winning two singles matches, one in comeback style and one doubles match, to bring her string of consecutive wins to 14. Novo came back to beat Wofford's Mary Ellen Henry in the first singles match of the day for the junior, winning 1-6, 6-2, 10-7, as she dropped her first set of the season. The two-time Division II All-American beat East Carolina's Jessica Cook to close her singles action on the day, though she teamed with freshman Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) to win her doubles match against High Point's Caroline Mount and Kelly-Jayne Tolman, 8-5.
The duo of senior Susana Hernandez (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano) and junior Vivian Neuenschwander (Arequipa, Peru/Max-Uhle) won their doubles match against Jody Wicks and Rebecca Carr, 9-7. Hernandez also offered up her 44th career singles win against Cayley Wetzig of Wofford, 6-1, 6-1.
The Spartans wrap up the Wofford Fall Challenge on Saturday, as they will see action at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex for women's competition.
