SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El Angel) won her singles match and two doubles matches to run her winning stretch to 18 matches as the USC Upstate women's tennis team won 10 of 12 matches to wrap up the Wofford Fall Challenge, which was played at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Saturday.
The tournament features play between two schools in singles and then playing another school in doubles, so it is not a true dual match format and no team scoring is recorded. However, the Spartans posted a 5-1 singles victory against High Point, a 3-0 win in doubles against Wofford and a 2-1 doubles win against East Carolina.
Novo teamed with freshman Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) to down East Carolina's Jessica Cook and Tamara Sachs, 8-6 and Wofford's Mary Ellen Henry and Adriane Hodges, 8-5, before she downed High Point's Rebecca Carr, 6-1, 6-0, in singles play. The Spartan junior has won 10 straight singles matches, dating back to a win the NCAA Division II Nationals last season and has taken eight straight doubles matches with Milovanovic since the start of the year.
The duo of senior Susana Hernandez (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano) and junior Vivian Neuenschwander (Arequipa, Peru/Max-Uhle) finished the weekend a perfect 3-0 in doubles, beating Wofford's Sonia Anand and Mary Elston Heanor, 8-4, and East Carolina's Alex Smith and Brooke Walter, 8-5. Hernandez added a 6-3, 6-0 win over High Point's Caroline Mount in singles while Neuenschwander defeated High Point's Sheela Lyengar, 6-4, 6-2, in singles play.
The duo of junior Maria Herrera (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and senior Diana Martinez (Medillin, Colombia/Nuestra Senora del Rosario) defeated Wofford's Caley Wetzig and Sabrina Smyers, 8-3, in doubles play. In singles, Martinez took care of High Point's Kelly Jayne Tolman, 6-1, 6-0, and Herrera came from behind to defeat Iris Schabetsberger, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
The Spartans will be back in action as they head to the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C., for the four-day tournament, starting on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
