Upstate Set For First Home Basketball Game In DI Era Against Summit League's IUPUI

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After two games against big Division I schools in Kentucky and Wake Forest, the USC Upstate women's basketball team excelled in its first game against a similar DI school with an 80-68 win at Charleston Southern. Now, the 1-2 Spartans will look to stay on a roll as they open their home slate with a 7 p.m. Wednesday game against IUPUI.
The Spartans' offense took flight against Charleston Southern, shooting 50 percent from the field (31-for-62). The team is led by sophomore Courtney Hawkins, who averages 13.7 points per game. The Spartans also get 11.7 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game from freshman Oceana Jackson and 10.7 points per game from freshman Tiffany Whiting. Junior Ebony Johnson, the undersized 5-7 guard, leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game.
IUPUI enters Wednesday's game 1-3 overall after a 1-2 performance during the Women's NIT Tournament. Julia Whitted has led the Jaguars so far, averaging 11.0 points and 7.3 points per game. She led the Jags with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the 60-49 win over Marshall on Friday. Two other Jags average 10 or more points per game in Christina Cunnigham and Jernisha Cann.

• This is USC Upstate's first women's basketball game against a Summit League opponent.
• The Spartans shot more than 50 percent from the field at Charleston Southern for the first time since shooting 57.6 percent in a 94-86 win over North Georgia on Jan. 17.
• Sophomore Courtney Hawkins posted a career-high 26 points against Charleston Southern, besting her previous best of 25 at Armstrong Atlantic State.
• Sophomore Shanea Wyant scored a career-high 15 points against Charleston Southern, besting her previous best of 10 at Armstrong Atlantic State.
• Freshman Tiffany Whiting hit at least two 3-pointers for the third straight game at CSU, knocking down two.
• Freshmen Oceana Jackson and Tiffany Whiting have each scored at least 10 points in the first three Spartan games.
• Junior Ebony Johnson finished with eight rebounds at CSU, the third straight game she had at least five rebounds.
• Junior Courtney Bradley is 36 points shy of 500 in her career, seven 3-pointers shy of 100 and one assist shy of seventh in school history.
• The Spartans have put four players in double-figure points in two of their three games this year.
