Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's soccer program will begin the Division I Era playing in Radford's tournament against Winthrop and Radford to start a 17-game slate that includes a road contest against Clemson as well as a full Atlantic Sun Conference schedule.
"This is our first season at the Division I level and there is an element of the unknown," said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. "With the exception of Presbyterian and Newberry, we have never played any of these teams before. It will be a challenging schedule with a lot of tough opponents both in the conference and out."
Upstate opens the regular season on Sept. 1 and 2 at Radford's tournament before heading to Clemson to take on the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 12. The game at Clemson will be the first regular season matchup between the two schools since 1989 when Upstate was a member of NAIA. Clemson holds an 0-7-1 record against Upstate with the one tie coming in 1983 when the Spartans were riding a 15-game winning streak and went on to finish third in the NAIA National Tournament. Upstate and Clemson battled to a 1-1 draw.
Upstate also has non-conference games against Georgia Southern, Georgia State, VMI, Presbyterian, and Newberry. The Spartans will play four of its nine A-Sun Conference games at home, hosting Lipscomb, Belmont, Florida Gulf Coast, and Stetson. Upstate will hit the road in league play against North Florida, Jacksonville, Gardner-Webb, Mercer, and Campbell.
Upstate finished the 2006 season with a 12-3-3 record and a No. 20 final national ranking. The Spartans earned an apperance in the NCAA Tournament, the 10th in 16 years in NCAA Division II membership.
