Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate head softball coach Chris Hawkins announces the signing of Kayla Short to finalize the recruiting class for the 2008 season.
Short is a transfer from Walters State College in Morristown, Tenn. She spent the last two seasons as a pitcher and offensive standout for the Senators. As a sophomore, she was 22-14 with 157 strikeouts in 219 1/3 innings pitched and 30 complete games in the circle. She led the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA) in innings pitched and was fourth in strikeouts. She also hit .304 at the plate. She ranked among the league leaders with 55 RBIs (second), 13 home runs (third), 48 runs (sixth), and a .592 slugging percentage (15th).
"Kayla has the potential to come in and be a factor offensively and in the circle," said Hawkins. "Playing college-level softball for two years has given her invaluable experience and she was a standout pitcher and player on the high school level at Ashbrook as well."
Short (Gastonia, N.C.; Ashbrook High School) joins Kim Brasil (C/UTL; Mississauga, Ontario), Morgan Childers (P; Kings Mountain, N.C.), Courtney Feldon (UTL; Denver, N.C.), Emily Montieth (UTL; Clover, S.C.), Lauren Quevedo (1B; Wellington, Fla.), Sasha Stepaniuk (3B; Missassauga, Ontario), Courtney Tate (OF; Kings Mountain, N.C.), and Jenna Torbert (C; Denver, N.C.) in the program's first ever Division I recruiting class. All of the signees, with the exception of Short, signed during the early signing period in the Fall of 2006.
