SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Not only did Diana Martinez perform well on the tennis court in 2006-07, but the USC Upstate junior also excelled in the classroom and the combined effort has landed her on ESPN The Magazine's First Team Academic All-District team as released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Martinez tallied a 21-3 record playing at No. 3 and No. 4 singles in helping Upstate to a 21-6 overall record, a second-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference, and the program's first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Nationals. She also teamed with playing partner Maria Herrera for a 19-6 doubles record. She has won 60 singles matches in her three years at Upstate.
However, it was also her performance in the classroom that allowed the Medellin, Colombia, native to earn Academic All-District honors in District III. She just finished her sixth semester at USC Upstate and carries a perfect 4.0 GPA as an economics major. She was named the athletic department's Female Student-Athlete of the Year in late April.
With her first team selection, Martinez is automatically put into the nomination pool for Academic All-America honors.
