SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate women's tennis player Diana Martinez has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-America Team released by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Martinez, a junior from Medellin, Colombia, had a standout year both in the classroom and on the court. In the classroom, she recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year and carries a cumulative 4.0 GPA over her three-year career. An economics major, she was named the USC Upstate Female Student-Athlete of the Year, the first time a non-senior has won the award in the history of the athletic department.
Martinez had just as an impressive year on the court. She finished the season with a 21-3 singles record, playing primarily at the No. 4 position where she was 15-1. She also played at the No. 3 position and had a 6-2 record. She teamed with Maria Herrera to record a 19-6 mark in doubles and the No. 3 position. She helped lead the Spartans to a second-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference regular season standings and a No. 7 final national ranking. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the third straight year and Martinez helped lead the team to its first ever appearance in the NCAA Nationals.
Martinez is the only female student-athlete from the Peach Belt Conference to earn Academic All-America honors as a member of the At-Large team. The At-Large team consists of student-athletes competing in sports other than basketball, soccer, softball, track/cross country, and volleyball.
