Spartan Women's Tennis Announces 2007-08 Schedule

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Five fall tournaments and spring dual meets against Jacksonville and South Florida, both NCAA Tournament teams in 2007, highlight the 2007-08 USC Upstate women's tennis schedule, head coach Alessandro DeMarzo announced on Wednesday.
The Spartans kick off their NCAA Division I era with the USC Upstate Tournament on Sept. 14-15 before hitting the road for the rest of the fall. Upstate will travel to the North Carolina State Tournament from Sept. 21-23 before heading back to Spartanburg for the Wofford Tournament on Oct. 5-6. The Spartans will head to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in Chapel Hill from Oct. 17-21 before wrapping up the fall at the Southern Intercollegiate in Columbia, S.C., from Oct. 26-27.
In the spring, the Spartans will compete in the dual portion of their schedule, including their first run-through the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Spartans will welcome Mercer (Feb. 29), Kennesaw State (March 1), Stetson (March 14), Florida Gulf Coast (March 22), Gardner-Webb (April 4) and Campbell (April 5) to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex for home conference meets and travel to Lipscomb (March 7), Belmont (March 8), North Florida (March 28), Jacksonville (March 29) and ETSU (April 9) for conference matches.
In non-conference action, the Spartans will travel to Davidson (Jan. 27) to open the Division I dual meet era before coming back to Upstate for a Feb. 1 match with North Carolina A&T. The Spartans will then make the short trip to crosstown foe Wofford on Feb. 6 and play home matches against Presbyterian (Feb. 15) and Georgia Southern (Feb. 24). After opening the A-Sun season, the Spartans will also hit the road for non-conference dates against Winthrop (March 2), South Florida (March 30), Longwood (April 10) and West Virginia (April 11).
Upstate finished its final season in Division II with a 21-6 record and a final ranking of seventh in the country. The Spartans finished third in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and advanced to their sixth straight NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the round of 16. In three seasons at the helm of both the men's and women's programs, DeMarzo has led the Spartans to 97 combined wins.
