RALEIGH, N.C. - The USC Upstate women's tennis team continued its fall tournament schedule, playing at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational on Friday, with two of the four Spartans at the tournament reaching the semifinals of their singles' flights. The other two Spartans advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles' bracket, making all four still alive.
Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El Angel) may not be used to being the underdog walking into the match, but the two-time Division II All-American found herself in that situation on Friday afternoon, as she played the tournament's No. 1 seed, Elon's Deana Bailey in the first round. Novo dominated the Phoenix's star, winning 6-3, 6-1. She moves onto the semifinals, where she faces Presbyterian's Kristy Borza.
In the 10th flight of singles, freshman Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) advanced to the semifinals with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Wofford's Adriene Hodges. She will hit the court at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The lone doubles team in action, senior Susana Hernandez (Cali, Columbia/Colegio Americano) and junior Maria Herrera (Buenos Aires, Argentina) posted a 9-8 (2) win over East Carolina's Luiza Priest and Hannah Borges. They will face the West Virginia pairing of Stephanie La Fortune and Alexandra Kaluza in the quarterfinals. The doubles pair of Novo and Milovanovic will see their first action in the quarterfinals of the Flight A2 doubles on Saturday.
Hernandez fell in the first round of the second singles draw to Wofford's Cayley Wetzig, 6-2, 6-0. She will look to rebound on Saturday in the consolation bracket, playing Gardner-Webb's Laura Kriett at 12:30 p.m. In the fifth flight, Herrera fell 6-3, 6-2, to UNC Wilmington's Lauren Isenhour. She will face Alex Smith of East Carolina at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
The Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational continues on Saturday and wraps up on Sunday.
