RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El Angel) won both the A1 flight singles title and the A2 doubles title as the USC Upstate women's tennis team finished up a strong showing at the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Novo, who beat the tournament's No. 1 seed, Elon's Deanna Bailey, in the first round, took out North Carolina State's Neals Barringer, 6-4, 6-1, in the finals to take her second straight singles tournament title. Novo also won the USC Upstate Fall Tournament last weekend.
"It was hard," Novo said of her final match. "She made some shots that had me running like never before. It made me stay focused, though. The support of my teammates and (assistant coach) Tami Matheny helped me stay focused and in control, too. It was a good match."
In doubles play, Novo teamed with freshman Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) to down teammates senior Susana Hernandez (Cali, Columbia/Colegio Americano) and junior Maria Herrera (Buenos Aires, Argentina), 8-2. The duo also won the doubles title at the USC Upstate Fall Tournament.
"Before the match, Tami said that they're your teammates, but for this match play like they're from another university," Novo said. "It's hard but at a tournament, you have to do it. After the first two or three games, we did that. We just played really well."
In consolation matches, Hernandez won the consolation title of the A2 singles flight, winning by retirement in the final match on Sunday. In the C1 consolation final, Herrera downed Elon's Hayley Wahl, 6-3, 6-2.
The women's tennis team will get back in action on Friday, Oct. 5, as it heads downtown to the Wofford Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C.
