
Wedzik Paces Spartans at Sea Trail Intercollegiate

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Richelle Wedzik continued her solid play in the season- and Division I-opening tournament for USC Upstate at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate hosted by Elon at the Sea Trail Golf Resort Saturday afternoon. The junior from Bluffton stands seventh individually with one round left to play in the 54-hole tournament played on the 5,947-yard, par-72 Byrd Course.
Wedzik posted a 74 Saturday to give her a two-round total 150 and is tied for seventh with Bethune-Cookman's Kim Wong and Elon's Taylor Johnson. Murray State's Andrea Downer and Frederique Bruell from Elon share the lead at 145 (+1).
Wedzik's efforts throughout the tournament have helped the Spartans play solid golf in their first ever tournament as an NCAA Division I member. Upstate currently stands eighth in the 15-team field, just six strokes out of sixth place. The Spartans shot 319 Saturday for a two-day total of 634. Bethune-Cookman shot a second round 297 to vault into the lead at 593, three strokes ahead of host Elon. Xavier (600), James Madison (617) and Murray State (619) round out the top five. Gardner-Webb is sixth with a 628 total and is followed by Radford (633), Upstate, Belmont Abbey (640), High Point (647), Appalachian State (648), Mercer (649), South Carolina State (692) and Hampton (717).
Spartan Richia Wedzik posted a 77 Saturday and stands in a tie for 26th with a 156 total. Johanna Ebenhag, playing in her first collegiate tournament, is in a tie for 31st with a 159 total. Audrey Church is 64th with a 172 total, while Traci Bodner improved by five strokes over yesterday's score, posting an 85 to move into a tie for 69th.
The tournament concludes with the final round Sunday at the Sea Trail Golf Resort in the coastal hamlet of North Carolina just above the North Carolina/South Carolina border above the Grand Strand.
