
Wedzik finishes 6th, Spartans 8th at Sea Trail Intercollegiate

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - Richelle Wedzik turned in her third straight solid round of golf with a 76 Sunday afternoon at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. She finished with a 76-74-76=226 total to finish tied for sixth individually and led USC Upstate to an eighth-place finish.
Upstate finished the tournament with a 315-319-318=952 total to finish eighth, five strokes behind Radford in seventh. Playing in its first tournament as a member of NCAA Division I, Upstate held its own on the 5,947-yard, par-72 Byrd Course at the Sea Trail Golf Resort. Host Elon won the tournament in a playoff after posting a 54-hole 904 total. The Phoenix tied Bethune-Cookman in regulation, but claimed the team championship in the playoff.
Xavier was a close third, just three strokes back and was followed by Murray State (918), James Madison (921), Gardner-Webb (942), Radford (947), Upstate, Belmont Abbey (954), Mercer (963), Appalachian State (964), High Point (966), South Carolina State (1028) and Hampton (1056) in the 15-team tournament.
Wedzik was the top performer for the Spartans throughout the weekend, though she was not the only Upstate player to play well during the three-day event. Twin sister Richia Wedzik fired a 78 Sunday and finished with a 54-hole total of 234 to finish in a tie for 22nd. Johanna Ebenhag, playing in her first collegiate tournament, opened with a 76 Friday and finished tied for 55th with a 248 total. Audrey Church finished in a tie for 61st, while Traci Bodner was 69th.
Murray State's Andrea Downer won the individual championship with a 1-under-par 215 total and was the only player in the tournament to finish under par.
