NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Preseason Atlantic Sun Conference favorite Belmont used 19 kills from Cat Mundy and 51 assists from preseason A-Sun Player of the Year Colleen Nilson to down the USC Upstate volleyball team, 3-0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-26), in conference action at the Curb Event Center on Friday night. Upstate falls to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic Sun while Belmont moves to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in the A-Sun.
Sophomore Jesicah Ambrisco (Iowa City, Iowa, Regina Catholic) and junior Jovana Lubura (Beograd, Serbia/New Mexico Military Institute) each posted nine kills to lead the Spartan offense. Sophomore Morgan Bucciferro (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community) posted 18 assists and added six digs. Freshmen Angel Ward (Bethune, S.C./North Central) and Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) each added six digs.
Belmont jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first game of the match, as Nilson served for seven straight points for the Bruins en route to a 30-21 win. The Spartans stayed close in the second game before the Bruins closed by the game by scoring 10 of the last 13 points, finishing the game with a service ace from Nilson.
In the third game, the Spartans took a 21-18 lead after a kill from freshman Sandra Campbell (Orlando, Fla./Pilot Point (Texas)), but a Mundy kill answered. Ambrisco posted a kill to regain the three point lead, but a kill from Jaye Schuler and a Spartan attack error brought the Bruins within one. The teams alternated points before three straight kills from Mundy gave the Bruins a 28-26 lead and helped lead Belmont to the win.
Upstate will close its trip to Nashville on Saturday as it moves crosstown to Lipscomb for a 4 p.m. Atlantic Sun matchup.
