Novo Sets School's Singles Wins Mark During Second Day At Elon Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Senior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El-Angel) won her final two singles matches on Saturday to finish the Elon Invitational in third place with 16 points. In the process, the Venezuelan passed Diana Martinez (2004-08) for first in Upstate's career record book with her 74th singles win, a 6-2, 6-0 win over Campbell's Blanca Saenz.
The 124th-ranked Novo, who has a 74-21 overall mark, will now prepare for the ITA Southeast Regionals in Winston-Salem, N.C., starting Thursday. Novo, a two-time Division II All-American, has a 10-3 record this fall. She finished the Elon Invitational, 2-1, falling to Elon's Anna Milian, 7-6 (3), 6-2, on Friday before downing Longwood's Laura Simon, 6-3, 6-2 and Saenz on Saturday.
Senior Daniela Lovera (Caracas, Venezuela/Santa Rosa de Lima) also finished 3-0, playing in the fourth and third flights, as she downed Elon's Daleen Kloppers, 6-1, 6-4, Longwood's Ashley Melson, 6-1, 6-2 and Campbell's Cortney Armitano, 6-1, 7-5. Lovera has 42 singles wins in her career, the same total as her brother on the men's team.
Freshman Cynthia Lazaro (Lima, Peru/University of Lima) also finished a perfect 3-0 in the fifth flight, as she beat Elon's Melissa Wolf, 1-6, 6-3, 10-2 on Friday before beating Longwood's Jackie Esquerra, 6-1, 6-3 and Campbell's Tanya Ahuja, 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday.
Senior Vivian Neuenschwander (Arequipa, Peru/Max-Uhle) won two singles matches and also won two doubles matches playing with a member of Elon's team.
Novo and sophomore partner Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) won two doubles matches, giving Novo 61 career doubles wins, which is just three shy of the school record of 64, also held by Martinez. Novo's 135 career combined wins is two shy of Martinez's mark of 137.
The tournament, which was run in a similar fashion to the Wofford Fall Challenge, where teams played each other in a round robin, flighted format with no team scoring kept, saw the Spartans beat Elon in four of six singles matches, Longwood in four of five singles matches and Campbell in three of five matches. In doubles play, Elon took two of three from Upstate, while Elon and Campbell both split a pair of matches with the Spartans.
