Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate men's soccer player, David Stanbra, has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to a 3-1 victory over Mercer Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Stanbra, a senior from Worchester, England, led Upstate to the 3-1 win over Mercer with a goal and an assist. He scored the first goal of the game Sunday, taking the shot from left to right to beat the Bear keeper. He assisted on the final goal of the game, scored by Chad McCoy, to give Upstate the cushion it needed to finish off the match and take the win.
Stanbra's effort helped Upstate end its school record 13-game losing streak. He currently ranks in the top five in scoring on the Spartans with five points on two goals and an assist. He has played in 57 career games with 19 points.
Stanbra is the first Upstate men's soccer player to earn A-Sun Player of the Week honors this season. He also has become the third Spartan men's soccer player to earn weekly honors. Last year, Troy Simon was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and Jason McCabe earned Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same week in leading Upstate to a weekend sweep with wins over Lipscomb and Belmont.
Upstate travels to Florida later this week to take on Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast in the final conference games of the season before wrapping up the season at Clemson on Nov. 7.
