
Novo and Milovanovic Finish Up Perfect Weekends At Wofford Fall Challenge

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El-Angel) won two singles matches to move within one of the school's career record of 73 and she completed the weekend a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles as the USC Upstate women's tennis team won five of its six doubles matches and nine of its 12 singles matches during the final day of the Wofford Fall Challenge at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Wofford Fall Challenge is laid out in a team vs. team round robin format, with no team results being kept. Against Gardner-Webb, the Spartans won all three doubles and all six singles matches. In action against East Carolina, the Spartans won two of three doubles matches and three of the six doubles matches.
With her three wins at the Wofford Fall Challenge, Novo finishes her career a perfect 6-0 at the event in singles play. Her current 72 wins are second in school history to Diana Martinez, who posted 73 wins from 2004-08. In doubles play, Novo tacked on three wins in the weekend to also finish her career a perfect 6-0 at the event in doubles. Her 55 career doubles wins gives her 127 career combined wins, which is also second in school history to Martinez, who won 137 matches. Novo passed Susana Hernandez (2004-08), who won 125 matches in her career, with her four wins on Saturday.
Sophomore Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) also finished the weekend a perfect 6-0, winning a singles and doubles match on Friday before teaming with Novo to beat Gardner-Webb's Laura Kriett and Rita Gouvia, 8-2 and East Carolina's Jessica Cook and Brook Walkter, 8-4. In singles play, Novo defeated Gardner-Webb's Jenny Gomez, 6-4, 6-2 before beating Varinia Soler of East Carolina, 6-7 (7-9), 6-0, 10-4.
Novo downed Gardner-Webb's Kriett, 6-2, 6-0 and East Carolina's Cook, 6-1, 6-2.
In her first action competing with the Spartans, freshman Cinthya Lazaro (Lima, Peru/University of Lima) won both her singles and both her doubles matches. In doubles play with senior Daniela Lovera (Caracas, Venezuela/Santa Rosa de Lima), Lazaro helped beat Gardner-Webb's Nicole Scates and Allie Mills, 8-0, before they beat East Carolina's Varinia Soler and Rocio Cabinallas, 8-3. In singles play, Lazaro beat Scates, 6-0, 6-0 and Cabinallas, 6-2, 6-2.
Lovera won her first singles match of the season against Gardner-Webb's Amy Beavers, 6-3, 6-2. Both junior Carolina Bello (Bogota, Colombia/Bethel College) and senior Vivian Neuenschwander (Arequipa, Peru/Max-Uhle) also won matches against Gardner-Webb, with Bello downing Gouvia, 6-1, 6-3 and Neuenschwander beating Mills, 6-3, 6-2. As a doubles pair, Bello and Neuenschwander won their first match as partners against Gardner-Webb's Gomez and Beavers, 8-6.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday at the Elon Invitational.
