Charleston, S.C. - Although the USC Upstate women's golf team turned in consistent performances in both rounds of the Stono Cup Monday, the scores were not what the team or head coach Todd Lawton desired as the Spartans stand seventh out of eight teams heading into the final round Tuesday.
Upstate opened the tournament with a 331, 14 strokes behind the sixth-place team, but comfortably ahead of The Citadel in eighth place. The Spartans shot one stroke lower in the second round Monday, finishing at 330 for a 661 total. Upstate is in seventh place, 42 strokes ahead of The Citadel, but 15 strokes behind Tennessee Tech in sixth place.
College of Charleston leads the tournament with a 604 total and is followed in the eight-team field by Wofford (616), James Madison (625), Gardner-Webb (626), Houston Baptist (632), Tennessee Tech (646), Upstate (661) and The Citadel (703).
Richelle Wedzik and Julie Miller were the low Spartans on the day. Both stand in a tie for 26th after posting 164 totals on the 5,979-yard, par-72 Links at Stono Ferry course. Wedzik opened with an 84 but shaved four strokes off of her opening round total to post an 80 in the second round. Miller carded 82 in both rounds.
Richia Wedzik is 35th after shooting 77 and 92 for a 169 total. Audrey Church and Jessica Wofford are tied for 36th after both posted 172 totals with 88 in the first round and 84 in the second.
College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayer leads the tournament after posting a 4-over-par 148 total on the day. Wofford's Sarah Hurt is second at 149.
The final round will be unique as the eight men's teams will join the eight women's teams on the course with two men players and two women players playing in each foursome.
