Charleston, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's golf team posted its third straight team score in the 330s, finishing with a 338 Tuesday to finish seventh at the 54-hole Stono Cup played at the 5,979-yard, par-72 Links at Stono Ferry.
"There wasn't much of anything going well there," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "We didn't capitalize on opportunities. When we hit a good shot, we didn't follow it up with another good shot. It was a collective disappointing performance. We definitely have worked on different parts of our game and on paper and in practice we have looked good. We just need to see it on the course."
Upstate entered the final round trailing sixth place by 15 strokes. The 338 never allowed the Spartans to make a push to move up on the leaderboard, especially since Houston Baptist, in sixth place, was three strokes better than the Spartans on the day. However, Upstate put even more distance between itself and The Citadel in eighth place as the Bulldogs carded a team 350 total Tuesday to finish eighth.
College of Charleston, paced by Steffi Kirchmayer and Fionna Puyo, shot a 310 Tuesday to finish 15 strokes ahead of James Madison to win the tournament title with a 914 total. Kirhmayer and Puyo tied for the individual championship in the tournament. James Madison was second with a 929 total and was followed by Wofford (931), Gardner-Webb (958), Tennessee Tech (960), Houston Baptist (967), Upstate (999) and The Citadel (1053).
Richelle Wedzik entered the final round tied for 26th and shot an 83 Tuesday to finish exactly where she started the day, tied for 26th with a 247 total. Richia Wedzik rallied with an 80 to post the low score of the day for the Spartans and nearly jumped into the top-30, finishing 31st with a 249 total. Julie Miller finished in a tie for 32nd after an 87 Tuesday, while Jessica Wofford carded an 88 and finished 36th. Audrey Church withdrew from the tournament Tuesday and did not post a score.
