Ensenada, Mexico - The USC Upstate women's golf team turned in a two-round total of 659 after the first day of the Baja Invitational played at the Baja Resort. With the length of the first two rounds and the time difference between Spartanburg and Western Mexico, team standings were not known at the time of this release. Final results will be available following completion of the final round Tuesday afternoon.
Richia Wedzik led Upsate with a 75-78=153 36-hole total. The two solid rounds put the junior in the top 10 individually.
"Richia really played well and remained focussed throughout the 11-hour day," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "She hit great shots in places where they were available and bounced back from her mistakes. She was quite the opposite of what was happening elsewhere with the team. She should be proud of her rounds and I am excited for her to be in this position."
Richelle Wedzik was the second best Spartan on the day, finishing with an 83-79=162 total. Jessica Wofford turned in an 84-87=171 effort, while Julie Miller shot an 89 and an 84 for a 173 total. Traci Bodner rounded out the scoring with an 89-93=192 total.
"Our lack of competitive drive showed today in our play," said Lawton. "Other than Richia, we didn't capitalize on opportunities to make easy pars and birdies, and when the time came to really save a stroke in a difficult situation, it just wasn't there."
Upstate is one of 12 teams playing in the tournament with schools representing the Big Ten, Conference USA, Atlantic Sun and other top athletic conferences in the country.
