Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's golf team will hit the links for the first time this spring in the BSC Classic hosted by Alabama-Birmingham in Birmingham, Ala., Monday and Tuesday.
In addition to the men's team, the women's golf team will play its second tournament of the spring Monday and Tuesday at the Fighting Camel Classic hosted by Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.
The men's team is coming off of a strong fall season in its first year of NCAA Division I competition. Josh Gallman won two individual titles in six tournaments. He was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Month two of the three times it was awarded. Michael Lawrence won the individual championship at the Rutgers Invitational, leading Upstate to the team championship. The Spartans finished the fall with five top five team finishes in six tournaments.
Upstate is less than nine months removed from finishing second in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Gallman, then a freshman, and Baxter Culler helped lead the Spartans to a tremendous 2006-07 season. Culler was an All-American selection and earned All-Conference in the Peach Belt Conference. Gallman finished the final round of the NCAA D-II Nationals with a 4-under score to lead Upstate to a second-place finish by one stroke.
The women's team finished eighth in its first tournament of the spring, the Baja Invitational, played in Mexico, Feb. 12-13. The Spartans will look to regain the consistency they had in the fall when the team placed in the top five in three of the five tournaments they played.
