Tega Cay, S.C. - Despite lowering its score another five strokes from the second round to the third, the USC Upstate women's golf team finished eighth out of 14 teams at the Shamrock Intercollegiate Sunday.
The Shamrock Intercollegiate was hosted by Winthrop at the par 72, 5,969 yard Tega Cay Golf Club. The three-round event started Friday and concluded Sunday.
Upstate lowered its team scores in each round, opening the tournament with a 335 Friday. The Spartans turned in a 330 Saturday, then fired a 325 Sunday, cutting 10 strokes off of the team score from the first round to the final round.
"I was impressed by Jessica (Wofford) and Audrey (Church) playing their final rounds as well as they did," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "They turned in their lowest rounds of the year in cold and windy conditions. The encouraging thing is that we are getting some scores out of our four and five players. What we need to do is work on taking advantage when conditions are good and getting scores up and down the lineup.
"I couldn't be more excited for Audrey. She has really shown a great deal of improvement. With Jessica, she has one bad hole that prevented her from shooting 79 or 80."
The Spartans finished with a 990 total in the tournament to finish eighth. Upstate started the final round tied for seventh with Siena. Siena, though, turned in a 322 Sunday to take seventh place by three strokes over Upstate. Murray State won the tournament with a 935 total, winning the team championship by a single stroke over Princeton. Charleston Southern entered the final round in the lead, but faltered with a 321 Sunday to finish third with a 939 total.
