SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Head coach Tammy George has announced the signing of Brittany Johnson (Tulsa, Okla./Allen County C.C.) to a National Letter of Intent to play for the USC Upstate women's basketball team. Johnson, who joins a group of four others in the incoming class for the 2008-09 season, will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Johnson, a 5-9 guard/forward, was a member of Allen County (Kan.) Community College's program for two seasons, although a knee injury six games into her freshman year means she will have three years of eligibility remaining. Johnson was second on the Allen County squad, averaging 15.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in 2007-08, finishing the year 46th in the NJCAA Division I in scoring and 38th in rebounding. She shot 47 percent (179-for-379) from the floor and added 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. In the process, she earned Second Team All-Jayhawk Conference honors. A graduate of Edison Prepatory School in Tulsa, Okla., Johnson was an Honorable Mention All-Metro selection by the Tulsa World as a junior.
"Brittany is a player who can make an immediate contribution to the program because of her athleticism," George said. "She will bring an added level of versatility because she can play multiple positions on the floor. She can rebound well and also has the ability to score."
Johnson joins four other players who have committed to Upstate in Chelsea McMillan (East Gadsden, Fla./Santa Fe C.C.), a 6-0 forward, Kolesia Richardson (Ft. Walton, Fla./Santa Fe C.C.), a 5-8 point guard, Lesley Daniel (Collinwood, Tenn./Collinwood), a 5-5 point guard, and Kendra Wallace (Hurricane, W.V./Nitro), a 5-9 shooting guard, as members of the class of 2008-09.
The USC Upstate women's basketball team finished the 2007-08 season with a 5-24 overall record and a 1-15 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference, but it does return junior Courtney Hawkins (Greer, S.C./Greer), who led the conference in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game.
