2008 USC Upstate Women's Golf Schedule
Spartanburg, S.C. - A veteran group of players will lead the team into the 2008-09 season as the USC Upstate women's golf team will play in five tournaments this fall, announced head coach Todd Lawton.
Upstate will open play at the Great Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina Sept. 15-16. The Spartans will also play in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate hosted by Elon, Stono Cup hosted by College of Charleston, Lady Monarch Invitational hosted by Old Dominion and Lady Hatter Fall Classic hosted by Stetson tournaments. The 2009 spring schedule has not been finalized and will be released later this fall.
"The strength of our schedule is definitely stronger this year," said Lawton. "We have three tournaments (Sea Trail, Lady Monarch and Lady Hatter) that we played in last year and added two additional events that have very competitive fields. The Great Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate has a great field with teams who have competed in the NCAA's. The Stono Cup will give us an opportunity to see more quality teams from the local area. We return all five of our players who played the majority of tournaments last year and added two new players. Overall, I look for the seniors to take their final year and play consistently at the top of their game."
Upstate is coming off of its first season playing on the NCAA Division I level in 2007-08 and turned in a solid first year. The Spartans finished in the top five in three tournaments last year. Upstate finished fourth in the Lady Monarch Invitational and fifth in both the FGCU Invitational and Rutgers Invitational tournaments. Richia Wedzik turned in a team-best second-place finish at the Baja Invitational and claimed three top 10 and four top 20 individual tournament finishes.
Richia Wedzik, Richelle Wedzik and Julie Miller are three of six seniors on the roster as Lawton returns an experienced team. The Spartans added freshman Natalie Buch and sophomore Summer Wall to the team as well.
