SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El-Angel) fell for the first time since USC Upstate moved to Division I in 2007 to an Atlantic Sun Conference competitor, losing in the `A' draw singles finals to 63rd-ranked Yevgeniya Stupak of East Tennessee State University in the showcase match of the USC Upstate Fall Tennis Tournament on Saturday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Novo, who won both the singles and doubles titles at the 2007 tournament en route to earning the 2008 A-Sun Player of the Year award, fell to Stupak, 6-1, 6-1, after defeating Stupak's teammate, Tara Byrne, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the finals on Saturday morning. Novo entered the season ranked 124th in the initial ITA rankings while Stupak was 63rd.
In doubles play, Novo and sophomore teammate Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED) fell in the semifinals to Byrne and Karina Kedzo, 8-6, but bounced back to defeat Charleston Southern's Andrea Schutte and Brooke Pletcher, 8-4 in the third-place match.
The `B' draw was won by Wofford's Sonia Anand and the doubles finals featured two teams from ETSU with the match not being played, with Byrne and Kedzo meeting Stupak and Paula Jamie in the title match.
In the consolation brackets, Milovanovic fell twice while senior Vivian Neuenschwander (Arequipa, Peru/Max-Uhle) won her match against ETSU's Jessica Ratliff, 6-0, 6-1.
The Spartans will get back in action and Novo will get a chance to face Stupak again next weekend when Upstate travels to ETSU for the ETSU Fall Challenge, with action starting on Saturday.
