Novo Sets School Career Combined Wins Mark With Her 138th Triumph

TROY, Ala. - Thanks to a tough, super-set tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles, senior Anna Novo became the winningest tennis player in USC Upstate's women's tennis program history, as Novo defeated Troy's Rawia Elsisi, 6-2, 4-6 (10-5) on Friday afternoon. However, the Spartans posted only one other singles victory, as it fell for the first time in the young 2009 season, 5-2, to Troy.
Novo, who broke Diana Martinez's mark of 137 career combined (singles and doubles) wins set from 2004-08, as she notched her school-record 76th career singles win, three better than Martinez's mark of 73. Novo, who also has 62 doubles wins, is two shy of the career doubles mark, behind Martinez's school-record of 64.
Fellow senior and Venezuelan Daniela Lovera added a singles win of her own at the No. 4 position, taking a tough-earned three-set win over Leonie Guikt, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The Spartans (1-1 overall) fell in all three doubles matches and also dropped matches at the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 6 positions to give the Trojans (1-0 overall) a clinching 4-0 win. After Novo's win, freshman Cinthya Lazaro fell in a hard-fought three-set match at No. 5 singles to Stephanie Vieira, 1-6, 6-4, 2-6, and Lovera capped off the match with a Spartan win at the No. 4 slot.
Upstate will look for a split in its Alabama trip as it faces off with Alabama State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
