JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Emilia Milovanovic picked up a singles win in the `C' flight to move within two wins of the top 10 in career combined wins for the USC Upstate women's tennis team to highlight the squad's first day of play at the UNF Hampton Inn 9A & Baymeadow Fall Tennis Invitational on Friday.
Milovanovic posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bethune-Cookman's Jeneice Ward for her 32nd career singles win and 78th career doubles win, just two away from tying Vivian Neuenschwander (2005-09), who posted 80 career wins.
Rain interrupted the tournament before it could finish the anticipated two rounds of singles play, so Milovanovic will begin the second round of play on Saturday. Freshman Catherine Estupinen's first-round match with Alexandra Langmo will take place in the morning after it could not be completed before the rain.
In the `B' flight of doubles play, the team of sophomore Ana-Sofia Camberos and Estupinan posted a first round, 8-4, win over Georgia Southern's Taylor Jones and Alexandra Langmo, but fell in the second round to third-seed Madell Janse Van Rensburg and Stephanie Parkison of Samford, 8-0.
In other singles action, Cinthya Lazaro fell in three sets in the `B' singles flight and Camberos also fell in her opening match.
In other doubles play, Milovanovic and Lazaro fell to Troy's Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt, 8-1 in the `A' flight.
The second day of the UNF Fall Invitational will start at 8 a.m. at the UNF Tennis Center.
