SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The momentum for the USC Upstate women's basketball team continues to roll, as the team will be complimented by one of the best prep players in South Carolina in 2010-11, as 5-10 post Kim Roach (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Upstate on Wednesday.
Roach, who has already earned four letters with the Falcons, earned Class AAA All-State honors from both the AP and the High School Sports Report. She also earned all-region and all-area honors as a junior, averaging 15.9 points per game. She was named one of the top five girls' high school players in the class of 2010 by SouthernHoops.net and she was also an all-region selection as a sophomore.
Meanwhile, she has played on one of the best teams in the state, helping A.C. Flora earn state rankings in each of the last four seasons, including the squad posting a 14-8 record in 2008-09 and a final ranking of 23rd in the state. Also active in club basketball, Roach played with the GA/Lina 76'ers Nike Team, part of the D&D Development program run by Jerome Dickerson, a former professional NBA trainer. She was also a part of the 2009 Junior/Senior Elite Showcase at Elon University this summer, being named one of the top 50 prospects at the prestigious camp. Roach also played volleyball for the Falcons.
"We are really excited to have Kim join the Upstate family," Upstate head coach Tammy George said. "She is an undersized post that is going to create a lot of match-up problems for other teams. She plays much bigger than her size and she is very athletic. She comes from a great program at A.C. Flora and she knows what it takes to be a success."
The Upstate women's basketball team is coming off a solid second season on the Division I level in 2008-09. The Spartans, under fifth-year head coach Tammy George, finished the season with 13 wins while posting the 20th best turnaround in all of Division I women's basketball. Junior Chelsea McMillian and sophomore Kendra Wallace return this season with a solid nucleus of players headed by senior Courtney Hawkins. McMillan, a Pre-Season All-A-Sun selection this year, averaged 12.1 points last season, while Wallace was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team after averaging 12 points per game. Hawkins scored 11.2 points-per-game clip. The Spartans open the season at home against North Greenville on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.
