Rock Hill, S.C. - Richelle Wedzik opened with an 81 in the first round of the Winthrop University Intercollegiate Friday afternoon at the Rock Hill Country Club and is tied for 13th heading into the second round. Upstate, though, struggled to find consistency and stands seventh out of 12 teams in the 54-hole tournament.
"We didn't like the final score today, but our improvement from the front nine to the back nine puts us in a good position going into tomorrow," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "The greens are undulating and very fast, while the wet conditions around the greens made it difficult to get the ball close on pitch shots. Tomorrow, we have to feel our distances better and hit more lob shots in areas."
Upstate opened with a 340 team score with all four countable scores in the 80s. Wedzik led the way with the 81. Audrey Church played a strong back nine and fought off some untimely three-putts to post the second best score on the team. She is tied for 26th after turning in an 84. Jennifer Judge shot an 87 and is tied for 41st, while Julie Miller is tied for 45th after an 88. Miller holed out from 141 yards on the par-5 13th for eagle to highlight the round.
Richia Wedzik carded a 92 and is in a tie for 58th. Jessica Wofford, playing as an individual in the tournament, opened with an 85 and is tied for 33rd.
Upstate's 340 put the Spartans ahead of St. John's by three strokes and behind Gardner-Webb in sixth by four shots. Oral Roberts opened with a 312 to take the first round lead. Winthrop is second at 316 and is followed by Yale (322), Minnesota (322), High Point (334), Gardner-Webb (336), Upstate (340), St. John's (343), Presbyterian (354), St. Francis (PA) (357), Cleveland State (358) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (376).
Minnesota's Teresa Puga opened the tournament with a 76 to take a one-shot lead over two players at 77. Richelle Wedzik is five shots back of the individual lead.
The tournament continues with the second round Saturday and will conclude with the final round Sunday.
