Rock Hill, S.C. - Despite shaving seven strokes off its team score from the first round, Upstate's 333 Saturday in the second round of the Winthrop University Intercollegiate could not push the Spartans any higher in the team standings as Upstate remained in seventh place in the 12-team, 54-hole event at the Rock Hill Country Club.
Upstate has a 36-hole total of 673 and is 13 strokes back of Gardner-Webb in sixth place with a 660 total. However, the Spartans lengthened their lead over St. John's in eighth, leading the Red Storm by four strokes entering the final round Sunday. St. John's owns a 677 total. The separation from the rest of the field is huge as Presbyterian holds down ninth at 710.
Julie Miller led the way for Upstate, turning in a 78 to post the lowest score of the tournament for the Spartans. The round enabled the senior from Jeannette, Pa., to move into 30th individually with a 166 total.
"Julie played a great round and was there all day," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "She played her last five holes, very tough holes, 1-under-par. She continues to play really well."
Richelle Wedzik, who led Upstate Friday with an 81, carded an 86 Saturday and is one shot back of Miller at 167 and in a tie for 31st. Audrey Church shot her second-straight 84 of the tournament and stands tied for 37th with a 168 total. Jennifer Judge is tied for 44th after an 85 Saturday gave her a 172 total. Richia Wedzik rounded out the scoring with an 88 Saturday. She stands tied for 54th with a 180 total. Playing as an individual, Jessica Wofford shot an 82 and is tied for 31st with a 167 effort.
"The team improved, but we should have better scores," said Lawton. "The competitive fire for wanting to play well is probably as strong as it has ever been. We just need to turn that fire into better scores. (Assistant) Coach (Sandy) Halkett and I just need to help lead them through it. The course is drying out nicely and the greens are really fast. It is safe to say that they are the fastest we've played on all year."
Winthrop shot a 309 in the second round and vaulted into the tournament lead with a 625 total. The Eagles lead Oral Roberts by two strokes. ORU is second with a 627 total and is followed by Yale (630), Minnesota (630), High Point (658), Gardner-Webb (660), Upstate (673), St. John's (677), Presbyterian (710), Cleveland State (717), St. Francis (Pa.) (722) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (747).
Winthrop's Brittany Dabule shot a 73 Saturday to take the individual lead with a 150 total. She leads the tournament by two strokes over Oral Roberts' Kylie Bollenbach at 152.
