The USC Upstate women's golf team got bad break after bad break Sunday in the final round of the Winthrop University Intercollegiate at the Rock Hill Country Club. In the end, the Spartans turned in a 351 and finished eighth in the 12-team tournament.
"There's not much to say when everything is a little off and then the breaks don't go your way," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I am proud of the way the team carried themselves during the round despite starting 25-over-par through the first three holes. They continued to play hard and it was just tough emotionally on all of them."
Richelle Wedzik finished as the low Spartan in the tournament, coming in 31st with an 86 Sunday and a 250 total. Jennifer Judge, who nearly came away with a hole-in-one, carded an 86 and finished in a tie for 44th with teammate Audrey Church. Church. Judge has finished as the second-lowest Spartan in all four tournaments she has played this spring.
"The scoring highlight of the day was that Jennifer shot a 38 on her last nine after posting a 48 on her first nine," said Lawton. "It included a near hole-in-one on a 190-yard par three. Her tee shot came to rest less than 4 inches from the cup."
Julie Miller finished in a tie for 47th with a 259 total, while Richia Wedzik totaled a 272 and finished in a tie for 55th. Jessica Wofford, playing as an individual, finished tied for 49th with a 261 total.
Yale turned in a solid 309 to storm into a tie with Winthrop for first place. Yale won the tournament title in a playoff. Yale and Winthrop finished with 939 totals. Oral Roberts finished third at 941 and was followed by Minnesota (951), Gardner-Webb (979), High Point (999), St. John's (999), Upstate (1024), Presbyterian (1050), Cleveland State (1059), St. Francis (Pa.) (1088) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (1114).
Winthrop's Brittany Dabule shot a 78 Sunday and held off Oral Roberts' Kylie Bollenbach by one stroke for the individual championship. Dabule finished the tournament with a 228 total.
