Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's golf team takes the course at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational at Chateau Elan in Georgia Monday and Tuesday, playing 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday in the 54-hole event. The Spartans are playing in a tournament for the sixth-straight week. After opening the spring season with a 35th-place finish at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Classic, Upstate has claimed top-10 finishes in each of the last four tournaments.
Looking Back At The Winthrop Intercollegiate
Richelle Wedzik was the low Spartan in the Winthrop University Intercollegiate, finishing tied for 31st individually to lead Upstate to an eighth-place finish. Upstate turned in a 250 team total in the 54-hole event played at the par-72 Rock Hill Country Club. Jennifer Judge continued to do well for the Spartans, finishing as the second-lowest Spartan in a tie for 44th with teammate Audrey Church.
Spartans Getting Set For A-Sun Championships
After Upstate finishes play at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational Tuesday, Upstate will have played six events this spring. However, the Spartans will not be finished with the season as Upstate will take three weeks off before making its first ever appearance in the A-Sun Championships April 20-22. The Spartans have played in several tournaments with A-Sun foes and the Larry Nelson Collegiate will provide Upstate with two A-Sun opponents. For the senior class who was the foundation for the program, the A-Sun Championships will be one last opportunity to make school history.
Ebenhag Set To Make 2008-09 Debut
After spending the majority of the season unable to perform close to 100 percent due to a nagging back injury, sophomore Johanna Ebenhag will see her first tournament action this week at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational. Ebenhag played in four events in 2007-08 with an 85.1 stroke average, good for fifth-best on the team. She will play as an individual in this week's tournament.
Wedzik Extends Lead For Team Stroke Average Honors
Richelle Wedzik's team top performance at last week's Winthrop University Intercollegiate enabled the senior to extend her team stroke average lead to 0.6 strokes over fellow senior Julie Miller. Wedzik tops the team with an 80.2 stroke average, while Miller comes in at 80.8. The next closest Spartan is Richia Wedzik at 82.4. Richelle led the Spartans in stroke average as a sophomore, while Richia took top honors last year. Miller has been consistent throughout her career, finishing second on the team as a freshman and sophomore and third last year. Richelle is the only player in the history of the program to own a career stroke average under 80. Her career average is 79.4. The next closest on the all-time list is Richia at 81.2.
Judge Continues To Turn In Solid Results
Jennifer Judge has played in four events for Upstate this spring and has finished as the second-lowest Spartan in three of the four events. Her play has helped the Spartans claim four-straight top-10 team finishes.
The Iron Women
Three Spartans - Julie Miller, Richelle Wedzik and Richia Wedzik - have played in all nine tournaments and 24 rounds this season for Upstate.
Seniors Winding Down Their Careers
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will have to do some heavy recruiting to fill the void left by the six-member senior class who are winding down their careers at Upstate. Julie Miller, Audrey Church, Anna Hastings and Jessica Wofford are founding members of the Upstate women's golf program and have been integral leaders from day one. Sisters Richelle and Richia Wedzik have been in the program for three seasons. Together, the six have proven to be the backbone of the program.
