Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate standout softball player Kim Brasil has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to a sweep of A-Sun foe Jacksonville and turning in a strong performance at South Carolina last week.
Brasil, a sophomore catcher from Mississauga, Ontario, led Upstate at the plate last week, hitting .500 by going 6-for-12 with a 1.167 slugging percentage, four RBIs and three runs. She began the week by collecting a pair of hits at South Carolina as the Spartans fell by a 3-2 score. Brasil's solo home run in the third inning tied the game at 1-1. Against Jacksonville last Friday, she collected four hits in the sweep of the Dolphins. All four hits were extra-base hits with three doubles and a triple. She collected two RBIs in the first game on a double while driving in one with two runs in the second game on two doubles and a triple.
Brasil was an A-Sun All-Freshman selection last season in helping lead Upstate to a share of the A-Sun regular season championship. She split time as the starting left fielder and catcher last season before moving into the role as the primary starting catcher this year. She hit .314 with a team-high five triples to go along with eight doubles and two home runs.
Brasil suffered a minor knee injury in the second game of this season which caused her to miss the next 10 games. She returned to the lineup and has been the leader at the plate for Upstate. She tops the Spartans with a .364 batting average and 11 doubles. She is also stellar behind the plate with a .980 fielding percentage.
Brasil is the first position player to earn A-Sun weekly honors this year. Morgan Childers has earned two A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors in 2009. Brasil is the second position player to earn A-Sun Player of the Week honors since Upstate moved to the league and Division I last year. Lauren Quevedo was a player of the week selection last season.
