
Cross Country to Compete in 26th Annual Eye Opener Invitational on Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's and women's cross country team will compete in the 26th annual Eye Opener Invitational. The event at Milliken Research Park is hosted by Upstate as well as the South Carolina school for the deaf and blind. The Eye Opener Invitational will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the women's collegiate 5k.
Last season Emily Tangwar won the women's collegiate 5k after a time of 18:26. James Jackson led the men's team last season with a time of 27:17 and a 40th-place finish.
This will be the second event on the season for the Spartans. Upstate competed on in the Wofford Relays on Tuesday night and came away with first-place finishes for the men's and women's teams.
On the women's side, teammates Carolyne Chelulei and Joan Tangwar came in first after posting a time of 22:57. They were immediately followed by Lauren Walker and Emily Tangwar, who combined to run the race in 22:58.
Jemeli Sang and Laura Transue were the third Upstate team to cross the finish line. The pair posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 24:02.
The men's teams posted first, second and eighth-place finishes. Cameron Thomas and Gilbert Kemboi finished first after a time of 25:30.
Finishing second was the team of David Dennison and James Jackson, who posted a time of 25:56. Dustin Thomas and Matt Henderson posted a time of 28:42 and earning the pair an eighth-place finish.
Following Saturday's Eye Opener Invitational, the Spartans will race on Sept. 13 when they compete in the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
