Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite outshooting
Belmont, the Spartans fell on Sunday to the Bruins, 4-1, at the
Whitten Soccer Complex.
Belmont (6-9-0, 3-4-0) got on the board first, scoring the lone
goal of the first period, when Dan Meacock scored in the
21st-minute on an assist from Sam Miller.
Less than two minutes later, USC Upstate (1-11-3, 0-8-0) nearly
tied the match at 1-1, but Tim Bailey (Simpsonville, S.C./Southern
Wesleyan) had his shot ricochet off of the post and allow Belmont
to keep the 1-0 advantage.
In the 31st-minute, the Spartans had a trio of shots
denied by the Bruins. Maurice Beggs (Arima, Trinidad/Middle
Georgia) had his shot blocked by a Belmont defender, while Timo
Foerster (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) and Erkan
Yildirim (Flensburg, Germany/Flensburg University) had their shots
saved by Bruin keeper Wesley Wray.
In the second half, Belmont tallied goals in the
56th- and 61st-minutes to push the lead to
3-0.
Upstate finally got on the board when Maurice Beggs scored his
fourth goal of the season off of an assist from Tim Bailey to cut
the lead to 3-1.
Belmont set the final margin at 4-1 when Nico Olsak scored his
fourth goal of 2010.
Upstate used a pair of keepers in the match, both playing 45
minutes. Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) played the
first half and made three saves, while Andrew Miller (Hubert,
N.C./Swansboro) played the final period and made three saves.
Belmont's Wesley Wray made six saves in the match.
Upstate outshot the Bruins 17-15 and owned a 4-3 advantage in
corner kicks. Belmont committed nine fouls and was whistled
for two offsides while Upstate was called for eight fouls.
The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday night as they
close out the 2010 season with Senior Night against the ETSU
Bucs. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
