SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate goalkeeper Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman Team, announced today by the conference office in Macon, Ga.
Collins did not take long to make a splash at Upstate as she tied a school-record in just her first collegiate match. In the season-opener against Charleston Southern (8/20), Collins tallied 14 saves against the Buccaneers as she joined Diana Wabnitz (twice), Samantha Spradley and Brittany Daughtry as the only Spartans to ever accomplish that feat. She is the only Spartan freshman to tally 14 saves in a single match.
"I am very excited for Rachel as this is a tremendous honor for her," said head women's soccer coach Renee Lopez. "She had an outstanding season and worked very hard throughout the course of the season. I also want to commend Coach Boldt with all the improvements she made not only with Rachel, but with all of our goalkeepers."
Collins joins Ashlee Barrow (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) as the only two players to earn postseason accolades from the A-Sun. Last season, Barrow earned A-Sun All-Freshman Team honors from her defender position.
In just one season, Collins finds her name etched in the career record books in several different categories. In 2010, Collins helped the Spartans earn a pair of draws against the A-Sun Regular Season Champion, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. Collins, who recorded a total of three shutouts, ranks third in school-history in both draws (2) and shutouts. Meanwhile, her 115 saves this season places her fifth in school-history.
In the single-season record books, Collins is tied for first in most draws and she is all alone in first-place in the Division I era as she is the only Spartan to record a draw. She ranks third in school-history in saves, fourth in save percentage (.804) and fifth in both shutouts and saves per match (6.38).
In the matches against Stetson (10/8) and FGCU (10/10), the first-year Spartan tallied a total of 17 saves en route to 220 minutes of shutout soccer at County University Soccer Stadium. Her stellar defense that weekend helped her earn A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 11 and she became the first Spartan player to earn a weekly award since the move to Division I at the beginning of the 2007-08 academic year.
Collins posted a scoreless streak of 295:44 during a four-match stretch from Oct. 3 to Oct. 15. Her shutout streak is the longest for an Upstate keeper since moving to Division I and is the longest since the 2004 campaign, when Diana Wabnitz posted a shutout streak of 407:23 from Sept. 9, 2004 to Oct. 6, 2004.
Collins first collegiate victory came on the road at Alabama State (9/19), she received help from her offense as both Jessica Jackyra (Cary, N.C./Apex) and Danielle White (Calhoun, Ga./Calhoun) notched a goal in the 2-0 win over the Hornets. Collins made two saves in the match as she played the first half with fellow freshman Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga./Cartersville) playing the second half.
Just one week later, Collins picked up her second collegiate victory and first conference victory, as Upstate downed Lipscomb, 1-0, on family day. Collins tallied eight saves in the match against the Bisons and thanks to Jackyra's blast from 35 yards out, the Spartans were able to claim its first conference victory of 2010.
