TERRE HAUTE, IN.—Chelsea McMillan scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but Indiana State connected on a blistering 51.4-percent (36-of-70), including 54.5-percent (18-of-33) in the second half alone to claim a 92-64 win over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon at the Hulman Center.
The Sycamores started the game quickly, using an inside-outside combination of forward Shannon Thomas, with forward Deja Mattox and guard Brittany Schoen contributing from three-point range. Mattox led all scorers with 22 points hitting 7-of-11 shots from the field, including connecting on 4-of-5 of her shots from long range.
Indiana State jumped out to a 12-2 lead before the Spartans would eventually prompt an early timeout from Sycamores' head coach Teri Moren, cutting the Indiana State advantage to 14-8 on a Tee'Ara Copney three-pointer with 15:01 remaining in the opening half of play.
Trailing 24-14 with 10:39 remaining in the opening half of play, the Spartans would draw as close as they would all afternoon, mounting a 6-0 run which culminated with consecutive lay-ups by Madisen Webb off of Tee'Ara Copney back-to-back steals to help spark the mini 6-0 spurt.
With the Spartans trailing 31-25 with 5:59 to go in the half, Indiana State mounted a decisive 19-9 run to end the half, to take a 50-34 advantage into the halftime locker room. A buzzer-beating triple by McMillan seemingly gave the Spartans a bit of momentum going to the break.
However, after a Kendra Wallace three and a Mcmillan jumper was sandwiched with a Thomas layup, which made the score, 52-39, the Sycamores went on a quick 9-0 spurt to take the deficit to the largest of the afternoon, at 22 points, on a Mattox triple.
From there, the Sycamores managed to increase their advantage to 30 on a couple of occasions, before the Spartans were able to get a free throw line jumper from Warsaw, Indiana product Kelci Freds, which set the final score and margin of the contest. Fields, in a return to her home state, posted five points on 2-of-5 shooting from the field and was 1-of-4 from three-point range.
Carmel Indiana's own Lauren McRoberts also enjoyed a nice homecoming , despite what was a long afternoon for the Spartans. McRoberts was the only other Spartan to post double figures in the contest, completing the afternoon with 15 points from the field, shooting 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point range.
The Spartans connected on just 31.3-percent (25-of-80) of their shots from the field, including 29.3-percent from three (12-of-41). Copney added an impressive 10 assists, while Kendra Wallace just missed double figures, with all nine of her points coming as a result of triples, finishing 3-of-8 from long range.
Indiana State also got double-figure performances from forward Andre Rademacher, who came off the bench to contribute 14 points, while Schoen added 12. Schoen did all of her shots from three-point land, connection on 4-of-10 for the day and was responsible for 4-of-9 Sycamore treys on the day.
With the loss, the Spartans drop to 3-3 overall and remain 1-0 in A-Sun play, while Indiana State improves to 5-4 on the campaign. The Spartans will be back in action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Ohio State to tangle with the Buckeyes. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
