
Spartans Set For River City Matches

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After dropping its first Atlantic Sun Conference match of the season on Friday at ETSU, which has now entered the national rankings at No. 69, the USC Upstate women's tennis team will face another tough test in order to stay in the race for the A-Sun regular-season title when it heads to No. 65 North Florida for a Friday match. The Spartans have won the last two meetings against the Lady Ospreys, but UNF won the eight meetings prior to 2008. Upstate will also face Jacksonville on Saturday in an A-Sun match against the 2007 tournament champions to wrap up the weekend.

March 30, 2009: Upstate 4, North Florida 3
Freshman Ana-Sofia Camberos, just three months removed from
entering Upstate, won the dramatic seventh point in three sets to
lead the Spartans to their 18th straight A-Sun win in 4-3 fashion.
Upstate found itself in the tightest match since moving to Division
I against the Lady Ospreys, who won five of the nine matches thanks
to sweeping the doubles point.
March 29, 2009: Upstate 4, Jacksonville 3
USC Upstate took a 4-0 lead to clinch its match against defending
Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament champions Jacksonville before
the Dolphins closed the match with three super-set tiebreakers to
make the final score, 4-3.
Spartan Volleys
• In their third year of Division I play, the Spartans have
an all-time record of 40-9 (.816).
• Upstate has now posted 10 wins for the sixth straight season and for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
• Junior Emilia Milovanovic is one of 10 players in school history to post 10 singles wins in three straight seasons.
• Upstate's three freshmen in the everyday lineup, Monica Pezzotti, Simona Cacciuttolo and Francisca Valderrama, have posted an 21-13 (.618) in singles play.
• Junior Emilia Milovanovic needs just one win to move into seventh in school history in combined wins ... With 94 career wins, she is one from passing Paloma Castillo (2001-05), who won 95 matches in her career.
• Junior Emilia Milovanovic became the 11th player in school history to reach 40 singles wins with her singles win against Charlotte.
• Freshmen Simona Cacciuttolo became the 11th freshmen in school history to reach 10 singles wins in their rookie year against Charlotte ... Francisca Valderrama needs one more win to become the 12th.
• Cinthya Lazaro is currently 14th in the school's career combined wins with 60 and her 34 singles wins are 12th in school history ... She is also 15th with 26 doubles wins.
• Upstate's six-match winning streak from Feb. 27 to March 17 helped mark the sixth straight year that the Spartans won at least five matches in a row.
