
Childers Leads Myriad Of Spartans Among Nation's Leaders

Spartanburg, S.C. - Despite not playing for more than a week, the USC Upstate softball team continues to rank among the nation's leaders in several statistical categories, and junior pitcher Morgan Childers continues to lead the way individually after being ranked in the top seven in six categories.
Upstate currently ranks second in the nation with a .980 fielding percentage, just .002 shy of national leader Eas t Carolina. The Spartans also rank 15th with a 1.74 ERA, 27th with a .745 winning percentage and 32nd with 1.47 doubles per game.
Individually, Childers, from Kings Mountain, N.C., ranks third in the nation with 372 strikeouts and 2.74 hits allowed per game. She ranks fourth with 14 shutouts and fifth with a 0.96 ERA. She comes in sixth with 29 wins and seventh with 11.5 strikeouts per game. She leads the A-Sun in wins and strikeouts.
Kim Brasil, a junior from Mississauga, Ontario, has moved into the top five in the nation, ranking fifth with 0.38 doubles per game. Her 18 doubles on the year tops the A-Sun. She also ranks 66th in the nation with 0.97 runs per game.
Crislyn Chewning, a senior from Willamina, Ore., has also moved into the top five in the nation, ranking as the fifth-toughest batter to strikeout in the nation. She leads the A-Sun with a .379 batting average.
Upstate returns to action Thursday afternoon at 3:00 in a non-conference doubleheader against Appalachian State at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans play a key A-Sun doubleheader Saturday at Campbell to close out the regular season. Both Upstate and Campbell are battling for one of six spots in next week's A-Sun Tournament. The Spartans are currently tied for the fourth spot in tournament position with a 10-8 conference record.
