Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate softball signee and incoming freshman Hannah Alexander turned in a standout season as a senior at North Davidson high school in Lexington, N.C. She added to a growing list of accomplishments by being named a Louisville Slugger High School All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Alexander was a second team All-America selection by the NFCA after turning in an undefeated season in the circle for North Davidson. She led the Black Knights to a 33-0 record, the school's first 4A state championship and a No. 1 final national ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll.
Individually, Alexander was 17-0 on the year, alternating starts with fellow hurler Tess Swing. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the 4A championship series in Raleigh, N.C. She tossed a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts to take the win in the series opener over T.C. Roberson, then earned the win in five innings of the championship game over Roberson the next day. She finished the year with a 0.28 ERA and 188 strikeouts in 107 innings pitched. She was featured in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the July 12 issue of Sports Illustrated. In addition to All-America honors, she was named the 4A West co-Pitcher of the Year with Swing, was a 4A All-State selection, earned All-District honors and was named the district's co-Pitcher of the Year.
Alexander will join an Upstate pitching staff that will return all four hurlers, including senior standout Morgan Childers (Kings Mountain, N.C.). Childers is the best pitcher to ever throw in the Upstate program. She owns the school career records with 84 wins, 963 strikeouts, 32 shutouts, .162 opponent batting average, 122 appearances and 693.2 innings pitched. She also owns 10 single-season school records, including 428 strikeouts, 34 wins and 15 shutouts in 2010. She led Upstate to a 41-15 record and a second-place finish in the A-Sun Tournament in the Spartans' first year of eligibility in the event last season. She owns the school's single-game school record with 18 strikeouts, set during her freshman season. Her 963 strikeouts rank second all-time in the A-Sun. Childers also ranks among the conference career leaders in wins and shutouts. The 428 strikeouts in 2010 stand as the second most in league history, just nine shy of the single-season A-Sun record.
